A Budderoo Hike in the Fog

A Budderoo Hike in the Fog

Sometimes hiking is about the destination, but on this day the promise of spectacular scenery was replaced by beautiful fog. This hike was all about the journey, and the journey was great.

We traveled to the NSW Southern Highlands and got up early for a hike in the Budderoo National Park out to take in three lookouts with famed views over the Kangaroo Valley. On the drive out there the weather had really set in, and I was feeling a little down about the low likelihood of capturing images of the view. However, a prompt from Belinda reminded me that this would be a great opportunity for moody fog images!1.

The hike from the carpark out to the two Missinghams Lookouts and to Warris Chair Lookout was nothing short of spectacular. The fog coupled with the recent rain provided the most beautifully saturated scenery.

We had the path almost totally to ourselves, passing a single other hiker. We saw kangaroos and a wide variety of Australian native flora. It was a beautiful morning.

For these images I really found the DxO PureRaw 3 plug in helped to bring out the best detail. I am really loving this plug-in, especially when there is a bit of detail in the scene.

  1. A video from Thomas Heaton that I watched a day or two earlier also resonated with me, reminding me not to be so locked onto a preconceived idea of images I planned to capture, and instead to take advantages of the scenery on offer!
